Bugle Contest Saturday 16th June 2007
The day began at 08.45 with the youth band having a rehearsal at Bugle Village Hall. They had worked extremely hard in the previous week having had four full rehearsals as well as sectionals, so this rehearsal was to blow out the cobwebs and top and tail the test piece.

At the end of the rehearsal, Sally presented a certificate to Rachael Scott (percussion) who has been with the band for many years and has now reached the age at which she is unable to compete with the band at contests. The band wish her well for the future but are sure that she will continue to help at various concerts.

The band would like to pass on it's thanks to Bugle Village Hall for allowing the use of such a useful venue and for their help with supplying a storage space during the march down.

Next came something really quite special. It had been decided that the youth and senior bands would do the traditional march down together playing massed. Many of the youth players had never marched before and so a bit of frantic marching practice had taken place previously in Lidl's car park in the preceding weeks (thanks to Lidl's manager and to Chris Rundle who did a great job of instructing the youngsters). The resulting band was around 55 in number and allowed a very impressive 5 X 11 formation.

Luckily, the ever threatening rain held off and the combined bands marched off at around 10.15 playing "Imperial Echoes".

After successfully negotiating the sharp left hand turn at The Bugle Inn the band continued down the main street looking and sounding really great. There were some lovely comments from the spectators, many of whom wandered how on earth the band was going to fit on stage!!

The youngsters all kept in line and in step (mostly!) and at the end of the march down both sets of players said how much they had enjoyed it.

The March Down

Back at the contest field it was the youth band who would take to the stage first. There were just two bands in the youth section, ourselves and St. Dennis Youth. St. Dennis were drawn first and just as they took to the stage the first of the day's three major downpours occurred! It was still raining when our own youth band set their selves up, but this did not prevent them giving a solid and well polished performance of Philip Sparkes' "Music For A Festival". Simon Dobson, the band's musical director said that he felt the band had played extremely well and was very proud of them.

Shortly after the youth bands performance, the senior band returned to the bandroom at St. Austell for a quick final rehearsal with professional conductor, Andrew Duncan, on the set march "Celebration" by Lesley Condon and the evergreen test piece "Le Carnival Romain" by Berlioz.

Andrew had travelled down from Scotland on the Wednesday beforehand for rehearsals and sectionals.

The Senior Band In Rehearsal

There was an impressive eight entries in the championship section this year and the senior band were drawn to play seventh.

However, half way through the performance came the second major downpour of the day along with an appearance from a low flying aircraft and a train!

The only thing missing was the interruption of a car alarm as well!!

Shortly after the championship section it was time for the results. The new chairman of the West of England Bandsmen's Festival, Leonard Adams gave the usual thanks and gave a touching tribute to the late Peter Minear, who sadly died recently. Leonard then kept the crowd amused in his own inimitable style whilst the Adjudicator, Dennis Wilby, completed his write-ups and results.

During his address to the crowd, Dennis Wilby apologised to both of the youth bands and the senior band for the interruptions by rain and plane! He went on to say how much he had enjoyed the high standard of music throughout the day.

After the results the senior & youth bands formed up to march back up the main street to mark the traditional end of the contest.

This time the youth players marched up behind the senior band, not playing, but carrying the various trophies and presenting a splash of colour with their black & gold rugby tops.

Unfortunately, this was when the final and biggest downpour of the day occurred but this didn't dampen any of their enthusiasm!!
