The Night To Sing

Frank Renton

Good opening with great attention to detail both rhythmic and dynamic - some really good effects.

Allegretto - nice sounds if a bit loud F lacks a really rhythmic edge for me too much is glossed over without making to real effect the conductor asked for - but it drives through all the problems - also solidly through N to O.

O - Plenty of poise here just the odd phrase loses out - into P ok but the line at P sounds a little insecure so phrases end sat of abruptly ubriaco - good style - Q - middle sounds a little hard R-S good.

S - Euph articulation! Its important to articulate as written - through T the lines indicated by the composer don't all work, all this passage is very difficult - several subito 'pp' don't quite work out. 325 - difficult and all cornets - W - good pace - but not enough dynamic differences. Build to BB fine - but don't hear the pulse through Baris. Troms and Tubas - so it loses tension - balance and use of < > so important - good finish.

Many good things in this performance but equally several weaknesses when the tension dropped.

A precise start. A little hard and brash in places but it has momentum and drive. Fragments were not all clean but the temp was maintained. Some blemishes in the wildness but has vitality. Rhymically unstable to I and duet doesn't always sit securely. Flugel could match the style more to other voices some looseness occurs in ensemble particularly into O. Some insecurity into P but secure cornet if not always phased carefully. Flugel/horns were not always blended and effective in style. Some blemishes in solo lines but good euph and basses. Baritones don't feel the line after T. Atmospheric sounds 294 if not always flowing around 303. Compound rhythm doesn't always fit. Duet insecure and blemishes around 325. Euph recovers well after uncertain start. The allegro was lively but ensemble had imprecision at times and the technique was on the edge. The momentum was achieved though and the climax was effective. ? was not settled and trombones was inaccurate in notes and rhythm. A well organised ending.

Much to commend here if not always controlled and blemish free. The detail achieved some momentum and character but inconsistencies will restrict a higher placing today.
