Music For Battle Creek - Philip Sparke

David Read

Movt 1

Good to open. I hear all of the detail. Euph/ Cor unsettled and not really together. You recover and 28 is fine

Toccata - all rather hurried and we lose quality of the tone. 66 Much better and composed. 86 the music flows well with good dynamic contrast but you do tend to lose quality of sound in the heavy passages. Interlude - fine.

Movt 2

Quartet loose and not balanced. Baritone fine. Well shaped trom despite the slight mispitch. 174 Euph confident and well shaped. I feel from 184 the music develops emotionally as it should.

Luminoso - parts are played but lack the emotional character and passion and expression I feel that this passage is all about.

Movt 3

Good dynamic level but I don't feel the disturbed accents as I should. Trombone safe but rather hurried. The playing has vigour and energy but subjects not always clear as at 399 for example.

We lost quality of sound in heavy passages.

Movt 1

Not convincing to open and intonation a little problematic (bar 5 & 6) in ff line. 22 not cohesive between cornet/ euphonium. Some good colours in p section (28-34).

Toccata - generally the ff statements needed more control and at times were overblown. A good tempo and general approach is musical, just needing more control of the textures - specifically the tubas and saxhorns were at times (42-63) too angular and accentuating the articulation. Likewise cornets at 130. Interlude - good conclusion (tbns watch the intonation!)

Movt 2

Lower brass not together on the chorale. Baritone lien delivered well. Trombone line not entirely comfortable however has a sense of musical intention. Good espressive euphonium solo, well accompanied by all. 189 good duet work in the Euph/ Cornet.

Luminoso - lacks some lustre and the 'estatico' could have had more direction towards 201 release.

Movt 3

Not always transparent in the lining of the parts in vertical cohesion. (298-322 well delivered in lower brass and percussion). Lower cornets overblowing again in piu mosso to 430.

Not convincing in entirety and lacked consistent quality.

Thank you.

Movt 1

Lacks a bit of sparkle in the opening statements. Euph & Cornet just make it through 16 - watch the intonation please. - duo not quite as 1!! 28 Settles down but is somewhat lacking in musicality. 34 rather wild and uncomfortable. 67 is better and better musical links are made. 78 could be neater. 86 watch the intonation in the trombone section please. 100 better details here. 130 so many loud and harsh sounds spoil. Interlude is more controlled.

Movt 2

Doesn't move together in the ensemble. Baritone in good style. Watch the tidiness and balance at 160. Trombone - just makes it. 167 effective. 174 euph has good conviction - perhaps a little more shape in the solo would enhance. Competent soloists are heard. Duo fair to close. 193 a good attempt at ppp is made - a tasteful ensemble here. 199 tuning!! And somewhat lacklustre in this section. 206 quite effective but sop a shade flat to close.

Movt 3

Not quite as one in the opening statements. 228 pp please. 248 fair. 264 Trom lacks a bit of precision - as do the ensuing soloists. More convincing moments are heard from 306. 339 lacks precision and detail. 369 doesn't really come off. 406 Not really piu mosso here - and so many hard and harsh sounds are there again. Close lacked magic.

Too many problems for comfort in this performance.

Thank you very much.
