As usual, Mount Charles Youth Band supplied a good number of entrants with Florence Stokes (cornet), Andrew Hammett (trombone), James Hammett (cornet) and Sarah Matthews (cornet) all taking part.

The first class of the day was the 10 and unders. It was great to see so many small people competing and they all did extremely well. Florence, on only her second solo contest, finished 4th with 82 points having played "How Great Thou 'art". Andrew, at his first solo contest, finished 5th with 80 points with a rendition of "Macushla".

Next was the 12 and unders class. James played the old favourite "Oh Promise Me" and was rewarded with a 2nd place and 86 points.

In the 15 and unders class, James gave a first airing (for him) of "Softly Awakes My Heart" and Sarah played "Oh My Beloved Father". James finished 5th with 83 points and Sarah finished 4th with 85 points.

Next came the duets with Sarah and James entering for the first time with "Moonglow". They gave a near perfect performance and came 2nd with 86 points. They were well "choreographed" and informed us that their tactic was to maximise the "cute" factor!!

Finally, Sarah entered an "Aire Varie" class for the very first time, she was a little apprehensive but gave an impressive performance of "The Ash Grove" and was extremely delighted to be awarded 1st with 86 points.

It was a very well organised event and our thanks go to the people that made it all happen along with the adjudicator, Fiona Chryssides MA, BMus, FRCO, ARCM, PGCA.

Special thanks go to pianist, Stephen Watts, who accompanied the players with skill and great sympathy. As usual, he was on hand in the days before the festival to help the youngsters with their preparations.
