Lostwithiel Town Band held their first Solo
Contest on 27th October at St. Bartholomew's Church, Lostwithiel.
As usual a contingent from Mount Charles Youth Band entered.
Andrew Hammett entered the 12 and under class playing Macushla
and came 4th. Charles Best, Sarah Matthews and James Hammett
entered the 18 and under class with Charles securing 1st
place playing Ave Maria, Sarah came 2nd playing The Lost
Chord and James Hammett came 3rd with the old favourite
Softly Awakes My Heart. Charles was the only entry in the
15 and under aire varie in which he played Silver Threads
Among the Gold.
The next class entered was, of course, the Open Slow Melody,
Sarah won this playing Softly Awakes My Heart, with Charles
coming second with Your Tiny Hand is Frozen, and James came
third again with a lovely rendition of Demelza. Charles
was awarded the Hicks Trophy for best instrumentalist. All
competitors were awarded medals.
The contest was adjudicated by Denzil Stephens and the
accompanist was Phil Carrigan. We would like to express
our thanks to Lostwithiel Town Band for a very well run
contest and lets hope there will be more entrants for next
year's contest which will be held on Saturday 18th October,
2008.
