This was only the second time that the Launceston Town Band has staged this event and it was very well supported by many local bands. The biggest class was the 12 & unders Slow Melody with no less than 20 competitors - this is very encouraging.

After some initial difficulties with the postal dispute, Mount Charles Youth Band entered three competitors, Sarah Matthews & James & Andrew Hammett.

The adjudicator for the day was John Winterflood ARCM LGSM.

Andrew came in "mid field" in Class 2 (12 & unders) with a positive performance of that old favourite "Macushla" on trombone. Sarah and James were just outside the places in Class 3 (15 & unders) with excellent renditions of "Londonderry Aire" & "Softly Awakes My Heart" respectively.

In Class 10 (Open - any age) Sarah was very pleased with her 3rd place after giving a very dramatic and passionate performance of "The Lost Chord". James was not far behind though with his delivery of "Demelza".

The most pleasing result however was in Class 7 (15 & unders duet). Having had little time to prepare, Sarah & James had taken a gamble with "Moonglow". This beautiful melody seems easy but needs to be played very accurately to achieve the necessary effects. With some very hard work the pair pulled off a near perfect performance demonstrating all of the skills required in good duet playing and easily achieved first prize.

As usual, our thanks go to the organisers of this very enjoyable event and to the two piano accompanists Barbara Uglow & Jennifer Coombe.

The players are now looking forward to the forthcoming contests which include Lostwithiel on 27th October 2007 and St. Dennis on 24th November 2007. Anyone interested in competing in these competitions can contact Rob or Michaela Hammett for details and entry forms.
