Mount Charles returned from the Yeovil
Entertainment contest on Saturday 5 February delighted with
being awarded 3rd place overall, and the Basses team
winning the best overall section of the day!
Setting off at 6am, the band seemed wide
awake although some of the team took chance to get a bit more
sleep on route.
Taking the stage at 11.30am, the band
started their programme with Paul Lovatt Cooper’s ‘Light
Fantastic’ before accompanying Dan Tamblyn in his solo
performance of Vittorio Monti’s Czardas, which brought the house
down.
Playing the Marimba, Xylophone,
glockenspiel and vibraphone, Dan amazed audience with his fast
hands and speed across the instrument, which drew praise from
the judge as being ‘an excellent musical performance from
soloist and band alike’
Hine e Hine, showed the band’s reflective
side, featuring Tim Whitehead, which again drew appreciative
applause from the audience one again.
Moving into a cracking arrangement of Mark
Freeh’s Ol’ man River, the band really enjoyed playing the piece
and some great kit playing from john Mitchell.
The finale for the band’s programme was
John Barry’s ‘Zulu’, which featured off stage playing and
narration throughout the piece which brought the programme to a
rousing end.
At the results the band won the Mayor’s Cup
for 3rd place, and the best section of the day –
which went to the Bass section of Mark Bray, Evie Smith,
Alistair Whitehead and Steve Thomas.
A noisy journey home, brought the day to a
great close, and the band headed off to local curry houses,
Chinese take-away and bed!
So a great day had by all.
Congratulations too Woodfalls, who won and
also to the other prize winners on the day!!
Work starts again now on Paganini
Variations for the West of England Area on 13 March,
where the band will be conducted by Andy Duncan.
