West of England Area March 2011
The band recently competed at the West of England Area, held once again at the Riviera Centre, Torquay on Sunday 13 March. Playing off the number 10 draw, the band were delighted with their performance that found great favour with the audience and many in the hall, but did not quite convince the judges to gain a qualification place for the National Finals in London in October. Andy Duncan and the band were very happy with the overall performance and in particular to the soloists throughout the band, which gained 4th place.
Special mentions go to Brendan on Soprano, Ian on Cornet, Tim on Flugel, Sarah on Horn, Angela on Euphonium, Laura on Trombone and Mark on Eb bass – all of whom played great, enhancing the overall band performance. Whilst the band were a little disappointed with the result, the performance is something we are all proud off, particularly as there we 12 players new to the band, and on new positions within the band. The band would like to thank the numerous comments from those people who congratulated us on our performance, prior to and after the results and the kind word we have received since.
We are now back to the band room, to start work on Titan’s Progress which is the set test piece for the Grand Shiled, held in Blackpool in May. The band will be conducted by Russell Gray at this contest, and are looking to build on the area performance, continuing the great work continuing by John Maines.
